"The fish always stinks from the head downwards." The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Proverbs says that this proverb is of Greek origin and first appeared in English in 1581. As we close out this election cycle, this proverb reminds us that leadership and accountability begin at the top. Today's news tell us of failures at the top-- criminal conduct in the case of Hussein to incompetence in the case of Rumsfeld to moral lapses in the case of Haggard. In such cases, there really is only one solution, and that is what the Bush administration calls regime change. Saddam will hang and Haggard has lost his ministry. Only Rumsfeld remains, and I doubt that he will remain through the end of the year in his present position. One of the best accounts of Rumsfeld's mismanagement of the Iraq was is Thomas Rick's Fiasco. One only needs to read this and other similar books to come to the conclusion that Rumsfeld's departure is long over due. |
