N.P. and Christina Wik and family, about 1895

N.P. Starts His Ministry

On November 22, 1882, N.P. married Christina Olson.  Christina was born a twin July 11, 1858 in Hara, Sunne, Hallam Village, Sweden.  Her father died when she was three.
Nils started his Christian work by conducting children's meetings in his home and Sunday schools in communities where there were no Christian activities.  N.P. writes that during his preaching, he could see that "red and white waves began to go through the people, which could be read in their faces."  He also did evangelistic work in different villages.  In 1881, he was sent by the mission to some of the northern provinces as a gospel missionary.  In 1882, Nils was ordained at the Uppsala Baptist Church and served as a pastor in various churches in Sweden.  A revival began to spread through the community.
Supported by the Sundsvalls Mission, N. P. continued this missionary work often going from place to place on skis.  "On the 4th of this month, I said goodbye to my wife and children," Nils writes in 1883.  "On the 5th we fastened on our skis and started out over Kilarne. Late in the evening we arrived, all worn out at a mountain dairy farm.  On the 11th, we went to Wemdalen-- a very tiresome journey.  We had to rest many times on stumps and rocks and finally skied fast down the steep Wendals Mountain.  On the 12th, we preached when both the priest and schoolteacher were present.  They paid close attention but had nothing to say afterward."  He also writes about meeting some wild fellows who showed their coarseness by gambling and drinking.  The wildest of them died a horrible death a few weeks later.
S. Swanson wrote in 1884 that he was a traveling companion with N.P. Wik to some of the villages in the neglected districts of Herjeadalen province:  "For my part I had very happy days at the times when I accompany Brother Wik.  His speech was strong, deep, gripping and convincing, and we were glad to have a brother with us equipped by God and filled with the Holy Spirit."
N.P. in mentioned in a book Baptism i Jamtland:  "1872/1873 a Sunday School was established by the zealous N.P. Wik, backen.  In 1880, the number of members in As was 15 persons."  The same book said that "the Myssjo Baptist community has been called 'The Mother of Preachers' among Baptists in Jamtland."
