A photo-card of Marie Wik from this time that shows her with a pleated dress, bobbed hair, and a sweetly wistful smile. Marie possibly gave it to her brother Nicholas about the time she got married in 1905 when she was 26. The picture has a patina of poignancy as Maria was sadly ostracized by some of the rest of the family. Marie married Elseworth Dougherty, an Irish Catholic. They moved to Omaha, Nebraska, where he built brick houses. They had six children. Her descendants, until recently, lost touch with other family members. I sent the photo to AnneMarie, her great-granddaughter, who found a place for it on her china cabinet she inherited from Maria. "What a wonderful, clear picture of her," AnneMarie writes. "She looks to have been in her 30s. She must have given it to Emma and Nicholas at one time. My mom and grandma have mentioned through the years on numerous occasions how much Maria loved her brother and his wife. It had to have been difficult not to have had contact with them in later years. Marie evidently was the only one to have married outside her religion and Swedish heritage. I've heard that N.P. was very upset with her-to say the least. I didn't have the opportunity to know her. My mom did and loved her dearly-appreciated her gentle, demure way of loving and caring for her family. We left Omaha, Nebraska when I was four. I've some fleeting memories of her and am thankful for them. She loved to wear satin and silk. I seem to remember brushing up against her dress and recall the soft smoothness of satin. The only belongings we have of her are the china cabinet I mentioned and my grandmother continues to treasure her mandolin." My father remembers visiting Marie in seventh grade with Uncle Otto. Uncle Otto made a wrong turn and ended up in Minnesota. Marie gave birth to Floyd in 1907, Florence in 1908, Elmer in 1912, Verna in 1914, Lawrence in 1917, and Dolly in 1921. Marie passed away at the age of 88 on May 5, 1967.
