Life
at a college or university doesn't have to be a grind. My most enjoyable moments-- and the moments
that taught me the most-- happened outside of the classroom. I briefly worked for the University of Phoenix, and I suppose that such online diploma mills meet the needs
for some people. But I cannot see how
that kind of education equates with the full experience that you get on a
bricks and mortar campus. So much of
what makes these the best as well as the most stressful years of your life
happens in the dorms or stadium or, in my case, a newspaper room. Your goal is not just to chase paper-- a
diploma and recommendations. It is to learn
about life that will help you for the rest of your life. The paradox is that getting involved in
extracurricular activities can also improve your academics. Firstly, other activities force you to be
more focused and intentional about your daily academic life. Secondly, other activities can expose you to
opportunities that can help you in your future, such as internships and
recommendations from professors. So, make time for yourself. And don't forget to eat and sleep!
